AN OIL BURNING PORSCHE: CAYENNE DIESEL COMING IN 2009

2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS

Yes you read it right! According to the ‘German Car Blog’ Porsche will launch the diesel version of Cayenne in early 2009. While Porsche purists may dissmiss and baulk at the mere idea of a diesel under the hood of a Porsche, the move isnt really unexpected.

A modern diesel will help Porsche meet the ever tightening fuel efficiency norms without going the expensive hybrid way. The engine is expected to the 3.0 litre TDi V6 unit sourced from Audi which currently makes 240 bhp and a massive 406 lb-ft of torque. Unconfirmed rumours also indicate that Porsche will use the bored version of the same engine which will displace 3.2 litres and make atleast 300 bhp. This is will ensure plenty of grunt on and off road.

While it is true that Porsche has to look for diesel technology due to the tightening pollution norms, it is still sad, that Porsche cars are becoming more Volkswagen than Porsche.

I agree with you Sadsack, Porsche needs to be Porsche and not take too much cues from VW, Audi. I think instead of just making cars faster, they should make them look better, case in point the Cayenne which just doesnt look as good as i expect a porsche to look.

Cheers

While the idea of diesel under the hood of a porsche will not appeal to a purist or a porsche follower but we have to keep in mind this is an SUV and not a sports car however hard porsche may defend it by saying it has the 911 DNA. Sure it has some of it, but its an SUV at the end of the day and instead of spending billions of $ developing the hybrid technology for this monster, a modern day diesel engine makes ample sense.
