Ferrari has always produced the drop top version of its mid-engined V8 entry level supercars such as the F430 Spider, 355 Spider and 360 Spider so it should not come as a surprise that Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has confirmed the development of the open top version of the recently launched Ferrari 458 Italia.

There were some speculations at the 458 Italia launch that the Spider version may never see the daylight and that job will be left to the California. Like the past models from Ferrari, the 458 Italia is expected to come with a folding soft top which would be one of the lightest and quickest to retract  and deploy among its peers.

The Ferrari 458 Italia Spider is expected to be launched in 2 years time which would mean a year 2011 launch.
