GM WORKING ON CNG AND LPG VARIANTS OF SPARK, AVEO, UVA

GM India is working on the CNG and LPG variants of Spark, Aveo and Aveo UVA. The launch dates are not yet confirmed but the company plans to launch the cars this year as sky rocketing fuel prices are expected to hit sales. Most of the automobile companies are now looking at the alternate fuel options seriously to sustain sales. The recent shift in market sentiment has had companies launching variants of their popular model running on alternate fuels. The recent launches are the LPG Indica Xeta by Tata and the 800 DUO by Maruti Suzuki.

P. Balendran, Vice-President, Corporate Affairs, GM India said in a statement: “We have been working on alternative fuel technology for some time and the recent fuel price hike has expedited the process.”

He added: “It is too early to say. Certain tests and trials are to be done.”

“We are trying for alternative fuel variants for all our models. All automobile manufacturers are doing it. This is the industry’s response to the spiralling fuel price,” he said.

According to industry sources, Spark is at the final stage of its development to run on LPG and will be launched soon in the market. Other models will come in later this year.

GM already sells the CNG variant of its sedan Chevrolet Optra is select markets like Delhi, Mumbai and Baroda where the fuel is readily available.

A few of my friends cars retrofitted with LPG and the cars are so sluggish that it cannot be believed. The air conditioner barely functions and is simply inadequate in the heat of the summer. My friends tell me that after fitting the LPG kit the incidence of repair has also gone up considerably. A colleague who bought a Wagon R duo has stopped using the LPG option because of the drop in power and roughness of engine when he puts his car on the LPG mode. Apparently cars with LPG kits also have lower resale vaue. I dont really know if that is true though. My feeling is that LPG is not such a great alternative. I profess to know nothing about CNG and therefore, I have not talked about it.

Yes, LPG can take the the performance away, its advisable to go for company fitted, then aftermarket. GM is sure on a roll, read http://www.motorbeam.com/2008/06/gm-on-roll.html

The price of energy, in particular fossil fuel, is historically high and seems set to increase.Fuel bills - whether for the home or for the car - take up an ever-increasing proportion of people’s budgets.
