INDIA’S FIRST ELECTRIC CAR REVAi LAUNCHED IN DELHI!

Maini Reva Electric Car

Maini group has launched India’s first electric car in the capital on wednesday, providing delhites an environmently friendly, economical mode of transport. In a Government first of sorts, the Delhi Govt. has given tax exemptions to the car which has brought down its price from a whopping 4 lakhs to a much more manageable 2.99 lakhs. The base version of the car starts at 2.99 lakhs on-road while the top end model with optional extra costs 3.78 lakhs on-road.

The incentives from the government include a 15 percent subsidy on the base price of the vehicle, 12.5 percent exemption on the value added tax (VAT) and refund of road tax and registeration charges.

“Our government is the first to extend such a subsidy to vehicle owners”, Delhi’s enviroment, forests and wildlife secretory J.K. Dadoo said.

“We have collected nearly 10 Crore in taxes from the cess imposed on the diesel at the rate of 25 paise per litre in the past three months. That money will be used to give incentives to those using environmently-friendly products as Revai” Dadoo said.

Describing Reva as “a little cute car”, Sheila Dikshit said her government was committed to taking steps to improve the city’s environment.

“It is a green day for Delhi. I have been using the car myself for short distances and I like it a lot,” she said.

“I appeal to all those who have several cars to at least buy one Reva,” Dikshit added.

The Reva showroom has come up in south delhi and the car comes with optional remote controlled air conditioning and heating along with climate-controlled seats. In addition, there are other options like a CD-MP3 player, leather seats, central locking system and environment friendly, colour impregnated panels that are scratch and dent proof.

Reva was launched 7 year ago in Bangalore and Delhi becomes the second city in the country to get the vehicle. Ironically, its London which is Reva’s biggest market, with around 1000 units sold since the car was launched in 2004.

Apart from London, Reva is also sold in markets like Norway, Ireland, Spain, Belgium, Japan, Malta, Sri Lanka, Cyprus and Greece.

Reva is not the best car around, infact more than incentivising people to buy it, it would leave the buyer with guilt and heart ache….

There is still a silver lining, which is unexpectedly from the govt. The tax and excise cut is a welcome step forward. They should also offer some incentives for other vehicle manufacturers like Mahindra and Tata who are working on Hybrid cars.

That said, why tax the Civic Hybrid 120%?
