Mercedes Benz Pricing To Undercut Rivals By Rs 1 Million, Planning India Production!

The head are spinning at Mercedes Benz India. With competition from BMW and Audi threatening sales the company is planning the next big step for India. BMW India recently overtook the arch rival Mercedes in India in sales. Read the story here

Mercedes Benz India is planning to manufacture the latest generation E-Class and the C-Class saloon in India which will give it a tremendous cost advantage. Currently most of the C-Class and E-Class components are sourced from outside India resulting in duty costs and hence the price. Mercedes already sources components for its global operations from some of the Indian vendors. The company has already started evaluating vendors and the auto components majors for its next big step. To justify the volumes the company is also planning to make India the production hub for its range of cars for the ASEAN region.

The planned production in India will help the german giant undercut its rivals, BMW and Audi pricing on the similar class cars by upto a million rupees! With full scale production in India, the C-Class is expected to cost Rs 25 lakh which even undercuts the Accord V6’s pricing! The latest generation E-Class is expected to be priced between Rs 35-38 Lakhs almost the same as entry level saloons from Audi, the A4 and the BMW 3-Series!

By bringing down prices so much does Mercedes not risk diluting its luxury car maker image? They may actually not increase their sales many fold by cutting prices.
