This is the new world car from the GM’s stable, called the Chevrolet Cruze (Codenamed GMX071) and will replace its C-Segment saloon the Chevrolet Optra in the low cost emerging markets like India and the more expensive Chevrolet Cobalt in the American market. The car was first revealed in a GM’s press conference in July. The Amercian Cobalt and the Asian model Optra or Lacetti will not completely identical with changes to front and rear including headlamps and tail lamps.

The Cruze will be the first vehicle to be built on GM’s new Global Compact Vehicle Architecture or the delta 2 platform which has been designed keeping in mind the developing markets and is the lower cost alternative to the already exisiting delta platform. The new “Global Delta” architecture will spawn as many as 15 models for GM’s global market.

The primary engineering the development will come from GMDAT- General Motor’s Koren Partner with inputs from North American  and European planning groups including GM’s German development center. Cruze will also carry Chevrolet’s new design language with two seperate grilles at the front and a golden bow-tie logo, which is also reflected even in the recently facelifted Optra Magnum. The car will be assembled in various plant around the world.

The 4.6 Metre long sedan will offer plenty of space for five adults along with a decent cargo space. The car will be launched at the upcoming Paris motor show in October and will go on sale in the spring of 2009 in Europe.

The interior spyshot above shows the dashboard with the daewoo logo on the steering wheel. The asian version is most likely to loose some of the more expensive stuff like the huge LCD screen and automated airconditioning but its still very good looking and reminds a lot of the previous generation Honda Accord.

Autocar India has also carried out the Artist Impression of the new Cruze based on the images which were exposed in GM’s press conference, also posted in this article above.

This has drop-dead gorgeous looks. Indian roads still to witness such inputs from GM lately. After the premature exit of the Opel Vectra, GM has no such class to offer. Optra has dated looks at not that awe inpiring presence as of Civic, SX4 (to some extent), Laura.
If one can recall, Vectra was a very tecnologically advanced luxury car and the half baked Chevrolet Forester launch simply left the cusyomers high and dry. Hope GM does more efforts towards the lauch of cruze in india at the same time as well.
