SOON YOURS FOR 2 LAKHS… KAWASAKI NINJA 250R
Yes you have read it correct. If words from Bajaj officials are anything to go by, you will soon be riding one of these machines for 2 Lakhs or thereabouts. Some of you might say 2 lakhs… isnt it too much? No sir, you would be horribly wrong if you think so. With the present duty structure, this bike if imported, would cost anywhere between 3.5 - 4 lakh rupees. So how, you would ask Bajaj would manage to sell it at 2 lakhs? The answer is CKD (Completely Knocked Down kit).
For more on CKD you can go through here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complete_knock_down
In a nutshell, it means that some parts would be made locally while major components like engine and gearbox would be imported.
Bringing a product via the CKD route attracts the least duty, close 30-40 percent, but it also means that an assembly line is needed and some parts would also have to be sourced locally.
Conversly, the Yamaha R1 is being brought into India as a CBU and hence more than 100% duty and therefore a product which costs around 5 lakhs in US, costs 10.5 lakhs by the time its here.
In a first again for the 2 wheeler market in India, Bajaj will import the Ninja 250R as CKD to avoid high import duties and hence would be able to price the bike at a very competitive 2 lakh rupees. This move yet again shows the commitment Bajaj has towards the Indian 2 wheeler market and how it wants to give the customer the best possible product at most competitive prices. We just hope that other companies also follow suit.
Infact we had such an announcement from Suzuki. We will post once we have further updates on this.

Tell us what do you think of this move by Bajaj.

thats a good move but it isnt a first.
kinetic was the first to bring aquila and comet, both 250cc as CKD and price it well
cmon guys we gotta give credit were its due.
bajaj loves to take false credit and pass off me-too ideas as innovative? copied ideas as novel?
Brian,
I have had first hand experience with the Comet and I must tell you the quality of cycle parts was horrbile with ugly weld marks everywhere. Kawasaki 250 R for around 2 lakhs is an infinitely better deal than Comet which sold at 1.75 lakhs. Firstly the kwacker makes more power around 40 bhp compared to 27 bhp of Comet. Secondly the quality of parts becomes critical when you have a machine which can cross 120 kph easily, which was not the case with Comet.
Also, Kinetic brought the Comet in limited numbers, purely as an image building excercize, while Bajaj doesnt need any of this image building at all. They could have also taken the easy way out by bringing the bike as CBU and pricing it at 3.5 lakhs and believe there are buyers for it even at that price. But they chose not to do it, for they wanted to make it as affordable as they can in the Indian market.
If this isnt commitment then what is?

i greatly appreciate this move by bajaj.. they set benchmarks.. i hope they stop at 220 level and bring these bikes for indians.. this will surely help bajaj’s image..
Just another piece of info. This bike will be imported from Thailand. The FTA with Thailand will greatly reduce the duties. Kawasaki Heavy Industries will be partnering in the import.
Abhay,
Thanks for writing in and providing this vital bit of information.
We will update as soon as we get any other information.

I think Bajaj should keep the price below 1.8 Lakhs. This price surely attract more customers to bajaj… People here in india will surely say no to bike if they see 2lakh or near 2lakh figures.
1.8 will be a good price for the bike… i know Bajaj people can do it.
Its really a great move by Bajaj I really appreciate that as in when there are gr8 cars coming in then why can’t the bikes. But I hope they maintain the same look and feel of the bike and donot modify as what Yamaha did with the gladiator or else it will be a great disappointment for the bike lovers.
its a good bike..but the price should be around 1.5 lakh.not mre than that..otherwise no one will buy mre than that..u can check comet??being such a good bike then also it was not a sucess…i think it shld not increase mre than 1.5 lakh.
Please check your facts before YOU post them misleading the public.
The Yamaha R1 does not cost 5 lakhs in the U.S. and there no 100% duty.
The government recently exempted duty from bikes that were above 800cc thats why Yamaha brought the R1 to India. The cost of the bike is around 9 lakhs. Road tax + Insurance and other stuff totals 11 lakhs.
Also the Kawasaki Ninja is available for 3.2 lakhs right now but no official figure has been quoted as 2 lakhs.
Also the Comet was a wonderful bike and certainly did its job of a steetfighter well.
The kawasaki Ninja we are getting is the detuned 27 b.h.p. easily taken care of with a Yoshimura exhaust and Power commander kit already available for it.
@Pratap…. I would appreciate you do a little through over before you shoot off one of these messages to us.
Yamaha R1 costs close to 12000$ + in US which if converted into Indian currency @ a conversion rate of 40 Rs/$ will amout to 5 lakh rupees. Yamaha R1 is priced at 10.5 lakhs Ex-Showroom in India and not 9 lakh as you say.
3.2 lakhs will be the cost if its brought into India as a CBU and the article above clearly explains whats the difference b/w a CBU and CKD and how if effects the import duties.
Bajaj will be able to price Ninja competitively because they will import the bike as a CKD resulting in much lower duties.
Comet was a good bike but the quality of cycle parts was poor considering the price tag. The quality is not even close to any of the Japanese 250cc’s. Just one look at the welding joints and the golden finish on the upside down forks was enough to tell me a hell lot abt the quality of parts used in the bike. It was poor.
waiting for The Yamaha R15… Ninja is good but Still the Yamaha has Some distinct appeal for it’s bike….
Excuse me all the people;)……… is it gonna be launched in jammu and kashmir
Thank you for your kind reply, I should have read through the entire article before I posted.
My apologies for being rash and immature.
P.S.: I cannot wait for the ninja myself. It will be bye bye for my karizma if its launched here for around 2 lakhs. This baby ninja has already received rave reviews all over the world and everyone felt that it was quitte pricey.

hi bikers..i think the price of ninja 250 R should not cross 1.5 lak..if it does then there wont be much buyers for this bike and it will be a failure for bajaj…so not more than 1.5 lak.
Yes thats a good move by bajaj against yamaha r15,but should truly make it affordable and not give false promises like yamaha .They should not detune too much like yamaha bcz guys they r launching for performance. They should not compromise the power for India and its better if they keep the price tag as low as possible..
Lets face it, this bike will not come any lesser than 1.7 lacs ex-showroom. Its a premium segment bike and Bajaj for sure is not expecting its sales to boost up with this. This bike will be manufactured and delivered in short numbers. May be we can say Bajaj wants to be the 1st one the in the market to have brought a 250cc. And 1.7 lacs for something which might go beyond 3 lacs if brought under CBU is really a great deal. So lets please stop cribbing about the price factor.
What sort of mileage it is giving, yes?
Its a mature beginners’ performance bike. 2L is quite a reasonable price. The R125(Europe etc), a very pretty bike, will cost you 3000 pounds UK(Rs 2.58L at today’s rates) if I remember correctly which would make Rs 2L very reasonable indeed.
I wonder if Bajaj will even be able to turn a profit at those prices. We’ll find out come September, I guess.
P.S. It cant just be a coincidence that my bday is in September, can it? ;”)
Hi!
would like to thank BAJAJ for making its best efforts to bring in KAWASAKI 25OR to the indian market….its really a great news for d bikers with a different taste for QUALITY MACHINES at an affordable price
would like to request bajaj to inform abt the DEBUT date for d bike…as i m really curious to know….please inform abt d BAJAJ STORES wher the bike will be available
THANKING U

Hey guys don drm of dis bike a lot cz bajaj din gv an asurance as such. da bike vont b launchd so better don disapoint yourself by waitng for dis bike.
Let me put the record straight, P220 has been huge didappointment for the Bajaj team. It hasn’t really done well enough to uplift the image. The Ninja is an appropriate Bike from the racing stable of Kawasaki. However, the price would be immensely decisive to throw challenge at R15. R15 has lived upto its reputation & will continue to thrive unless there is serious product out there. I wonder, what would be the overall mileage with this kind of output? May be fifth & sixth gear in the bike will be overdrive
.
Hi,
I think Ninja 250 is a decent bike, especially for people who have been riding pulsars or apaches…it’s a great bike to upgrade to…u can have a first hand experience of how bigger bikes work and will improve riding aswell to prepare us for the next big thing.
I would say even if it’s 2.5 lakhs…it’s worth it. with around 33ps and all the works…i’m game for it. Bajaj…my cheque is ready…But please please…..take the trouble of giving us digital speedo meter….when you can offer that in p150…
how many of you die hard ninja fan clowns have the cash for this bike
Edit from Mod: Please mind your tongue. Abusive comments won’t be tolerated from now on.
The Ninja 250’s are a decent bike for a beginner for the money, but that’s about it imo.
Hey guys, I am someone who’s been waiting for four yrs in a hope that something like this is gonna come to the market. Have a small job n cant afford beyond 2L, have been saving for years, so dont say things like its not gonna be launched. I almost bought R15 but a look at its back side was a real dampner. Its looking like a lions body with a deers legs. I hope this one doesnt get a makeover as far as style and look goes since we all know its coming the CKD route. Yes, as rightly put digital meters would be a definitely a good addition. I pray BAJAJ blesses, this good looking bike starved nation and poor but passionate bike lovers with a taste of the best in the world.
p.s- It doesn’t really go with the image of almost a superpower nation without a few superpower and gook looking bikes.
p.s- Owning this will also land me with the oppurtunity of telling anyone in the US that someone like me has just what you have “WORLD CLASS”.
INDIAN ARE MORE GENEROUS TO WAIT A LONG
From what i have heard and read on the net , In america as of mid august new orders for ninja 250s are not being taken and those who have paid an advance towards a 2008 250r are either being refunded or asked to upgrade to a 2009 model … expected to be launched late 2008 or Q1 of 2009. So in the USA it is not possible to buy a new 2008 250r anymore unless some dealer has 1 or 2 left over which i think is very unlikely. So i guess the news u heard might be true and kawa bajaj might even go for launch of 2009 model completely skipping 2008 250r which by the way is around 500$ costlier in the us or decide not to launch ninja here and just use the hype to sell a upgraded Pulsar 250 to us . It is getting to be frustrating waiting for these motor companies to give us a good affordable international bike.
Correctly said Shanker. I have also gone through some website and it tell that in US they have stopped 2008 250R model and 2009 mobel will be lauched in OCT and its going to $500 extra because of tweak in break pedals , fuel injection and also its going to look similar to 650R. I think we can except this 250R launch in India at the same time . So ppl save some extra money to this machine and also it going to be not less than 3 Lacs but its worth for this machine I bet you.
Please dont loose your patients ,I am sure that it will be launched in India very soon. keep reading all the updated website n mag. for more details.
For time being just see teh KTM DUKE 650 which will be launched this SEP some time.
Please DO WEAR HELMET WHEN U RIDE ANY BIKE

Its me Solo once again. I have just went to near probiking showroom on 30th Aug and to my surprise I was told that both KTM and Ninja will be launched only on April 2009 if everthing goes good.

Please do not dream for this machine. If you wanna to have this machine pls import it .

i hope Bajaj’s answer or R15 is slap on the face only if it maintains the quality & price to match. Higher price will have no competition to match & will remain an enthusiast’s bike and adorning the web pages with its technical reviews, and some where in the oblivion…
i want sports bike. this time i think that ninja is good.
R15 or ninja 250 is better.
Hi All,
09′ 250 has been launched in US.

Follow the above said link for the photo.
Happy days sooner
Cheers
Its taking too long to come
any idea how much more time it is going to take to buy this bike
i have waited for this bike since the auto expo
but i am running out of patience now since there are no new details being declared about its launch
it aint coming till april 2009. and surely will be more than 2 lakhs
bajaj auto should really speed things up and try to stay ahead of yamaha.
I seriously hope i’m wrong but i don;t expect them to launch Ninja 250
before mid 2009 and by that time the Ninja will already have other competitors
patience will definitely pay dividends in todays fast moving consumerism. bajaj is busy working out the modalities & technical modifictions to suit indian conditions. but the price bracket is not going to be for the commoners.
If it is Detuned down to 27BHP It would lose its edge. I would put my money only If it is just as the international 40BHP !
I feel Bajaj is getting too hyped for no reason….. they released bikes in India with Kawasaki and then later stood by themsleves. Now why are they launching Kawasaki bikes again? Don’t they want to sell their PULSAR………… it is one of the most annoying bikes I have ever come accross in India. If Kawasaki was to ask me for 4 lakhs for a 250 cc i would have paid it happily, but i would not be willing to pay bajaj 2 lakhs for teh same bike………….. that is how much i hate them……….
HI GUYS!!!!!!!!!
anyone sure abt d launch date for KAWASAKI NINJA 250R…….m curious to know,m planning to get one if it gets launched….
is anyone sure whats gonna be d BHP m WERE ITZ GONNA BE SOLD IN DELHI…..
KINDLY ADVISE………….

ninja 250cc is going to be a great xperience but the price should not go more then the 1.5 lakh. then only it will work in indian market, otherwise it will proof as a flop show.
For the record ninja 250R 2009 produces 32 bhp approximately, it is an outstanding 250 in terms of handling, rider position, set up and engine specs inline with durability. Looks are great with a few after market performance parts such as the fender eliminator kit, K factory exhaust, solo seat cowell it looks awesome. for Indian roads a much better suited bike that will cope with everything thrown at it.
I bought mine in Sydney and they are very scarse in the market the 2009 models arrived for the motorcycle show in November and were all snapped up, all other dealers in this region actually in the country have pre-booked bikes to as far ahead as June 2009. Good luck guys I really hope this makes it to India, I moved 11 years ago because I was just not interested in waiting and paying killer prices mine cost me $ $9240.00 AUD with all the performance parts on road inclusive of insurance etc. next year I will trade it in for a Gixer 750
waiting for ninja….

Bajaj Ninja for greater than 2lakh…

Come on give me a break.. The bike price is 1.35, but on road costs us > 2.
Noway am gonna think about buying a 250 for >2.
Pratap does not know much about bikes it seems and especially bike pricing outside of India, Pratap just so you know that U.S has a lower tax on vehicles hence an R1 costing 12500-13000 USD X 45 INR ( ) approx, in Europe it is much higher so it can cost upto 20000 EURO’s where is in Australia it is high too not as high as Europe and an R1 will set you back $18500 AUD +ORC which is approximately 7 lakhs still much cheaper than the pricing in India where a Toyota Camry sells for 20 Lakhs $55,000 AUD where as the top of the line Camry (Aurion v6 TRD 241Kw) in Australia is only worth $40000 AUD all inclusive……
hi guys the comments and the posts were too late
is there any new information bout ninja 250r
if bajaj launch ninja 250 then who will buy its own pulsar 350.my dear freind this is just buisness strategy.Mr Bajaj is launching pulsar first.
guys i have got a good news for u all…the bike would be coming in may-june with a price tag of 1.80 approx. for more info call.9838073734..its the no. of Mr> Mukesh Tiwari the chief of bajaj auto U.P. iam sure ………….. jst call him and go for the beast…………

lets cross our fingers and pray that the bike makes it here on time
and at a good price too
I really hope that Shubham is right! Been waiting too long for the ‘Baby’ Ninja. Would have definitely preferred the ZED (Z-1000) from Kawasaki Stable or even the ER-6n or 6f.

Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj has been quoted as saying that the Kawasaki Ninja 250R would come in as a CBU product, priced at over Rs 2 lakh.
KTM’s will be CKD, Ninja will be CBU.
i think the price should be not more than 1.5 lacs or else there may be a failure like the comet
waiting for ninja….
Man , ninja 250 won’t be out for another 6-7 months

hey!!! guys, ninja 250r when launch……
any idea guys…..plz tell me guys…………
and than how much this in indian rupeeeeee???????????
FYI
Talked to Bajaj Pro biking guys in Pune. They said that it will be launched in October. Price is still not certain.
NINJA 250 was on display yesterday at Pune probiking showroom. They were also putting up Kawasaki billboards. According to the Bajaj folks who were there, it will be launched during Diwali and the price will be around 2.5 Lacs ex-showroom pune.
WTF !!! .. 2.5 lac .. holy crap … :’( ..
Yes the price on road will be between 2.5lakhs to 3lakhs. it surely too high but that’s the quality comes with price. One more thing we don’t know whether it hit’s the India roads or Indian road will hit the bikes so hard to make them scrap.
IS this just a dream or talk about this so called KAWASAKI 250R… Please someone clarify my doubt… I got really vexed and tired of waiting for the launch of this bike… bajaj said today, tomorrow , day after tomorrow.. this month ,next month… finally it started in 2008 and now september 2009… Still… a good patience teaser..
October ehhh… Did they mention which year…. Plz do mention that too guys… I need to extend my dream more…
Launch date is after Diwali. I got a call from their pro biking showroom and the price will be 2.5 lakhs
Finally wait is over.. Ninja 2.5 is hitting the showroom on 5th Oct.
finally ninja is launched……it launched on 6th oct at pune….price for mumbai is 2.70 lac ex showroom which i feel is bit on higher side….but the bike is awesome..looks, performance, speed it has everything
What a dissapointment, after putting us on such a long wait and delay the bike is finally launched at around 3 lakhs on road in Mumbai. So guys all those of you have been waiting and waiting, its time to wake up and smell the coffee.
Good Bike. Will it be suitable for Indian roads? Let’s see..
The 2010 Ninja in the US costs $4,299… appx Rs. 2,04,000… wonder what the Indians have done wrong
…
This is crap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! looks like a cheaply VERY CHEAPLY modified PULSAR ,great news is CROWD gets a GREEEEEEEN PULSAR but tooooooo expensive (85 thousand rupees goes for the motorcycle ) the remaining goes for the paint .
Hi,
Its a welcoem change for all the bike fanatics…..as u must be aware that all the illegal superbikes in india are being picked by DRI, this is a good oppenrunity for bike enthu ppl like us to go for these kinda bikes, which are fully available for such less price.
Also we are talking about a parallel twin, which is so new to india, ofcourse the quillas and the comets were the 1st in line.
None the less kudos to Bajaj to get such technology to india…….also the pro biking scene has begun in india and this is just the begining….mint it!! days to come you will surely see the cc and the top end models also coming down to india.
A 250 cc engine, backed by 33 horses is good enuf for the indian public,as we are not used to handle so many horses……wth so much power one has to be responsibe and have a great amout of civic sense for other citizens.
I am hoping all goes well for bajaj and they in days to come get some other world class bikes like the KTM (off roader) etc to india, here’s wishing them all the best and keep up the good work.
cheerz
