Tech Tour De Force: Porsche Panamera Inside Out

2009 porsche panamera technical review

A lot of new technology has gone into Porsche’s Panamera sedan which is all set to make it world debut at the upcoming Shanghai Motor Show in a few weeks time.  Before the car comes out in public its a good idea to review some of the technology that has gone in making the Panamera.

Panamera is a landmark product for Porsche and carries as much as five technological first’s for the company. The technology breakthroughs wont stop here as more variants will come in future inclunding a rumoured hybrid and a diesel.

Panamera has Porsche’s first stop-start system in combination with dual-clutch transmission, the air suspension with additional air volume on demand and an active aerodynamic package with adjustable rear spoiler.

The powertrain line up for the Panamera has the latest generation direct injection units, low resistence internals and a new electronically controlled cooling management system. The PDK gearbox has also been fitted with an extra tall special top gear which lets the car cruise at motorway speeds without taxing the engine, conserving fuel and hence keeping the emissions down. Further savings come from low rolling resistence tyres and the stop start system. The V8 powered Panamera S returns a claimed efficiency of 10.8L/100 Kms.

Porsche’s engineers have further worked very hard to keep the weight as low as possible without compromising on strength and rigidity. Advanced production techniques along with intelligent constructions uses steel of all grades, lightweight aluminium, magneisum and even plastic! The lighweights door for example feature a load bearing structure made of laser-treated cast aluminium, an aluminium outer skin and the door window frames made of thin-walled pressure cast magnesium.

To aid aerodynamic efficiency the whole underbody is covered including the drivetrain tunnel and rear end silencers which helps reduce air resistence and lift forces on the axles while the active aerodynamics led adjustable air spoiler at the back further optimizes the air flow. Further, the high tech air suspension lets the driver control the amount of air supporting the car and adjusts the stiffness and level of body roll to suit the personal tastes at the touch of a button.

Porsche might bring the Panamera sedan to India to compete with the likes of the Mercedes S-Class, 7 Series BMW and the Audi A8. What remains to be seen is… When?

Looks like a lot of tech in there. Something which is expected from Porsche.
