Volkswagen Inaugrates Chakan Plant!
Volkswagen AG India have inaugrated their state of the art plant in Chakan yesterday. With an installed annual capacity of 1,10,000 cars the plant is spread over an area of 575 Acres and has been completed in flat 17 month, a full year ahead of the schedule! VW’s chakan plant is one of the largest in India and will employ 25,00 skilled workers. The company has invested Rs 3,800 crores again the largest investment by any German car manufacturer in India.
The new plant will start production in may this year with group stablemate Skoda’s Fabia to be the first one off the assembly line. Volkswagen’s new Polo will be produced in Chakan from 2010 onwards while Audi may also use this plant for future assembly.

The high tech plant features some state of the art manufacturing technologies like diode laser brazing which is more efficient and faster than conventional welding or brazing. The new Polo will use the technology for its body structure. The Chakan plant will also carry out pressing, painting and final assembly all in-house while the engines will be imported.
Volkswagen’s has already made its intentions very clear for the Indian market. The company wants to capture 10% of the Indian car market for which it needs to meet the stringent cost targets and volumes which justify local production. VW’s Polo to be launched next year will have a local content of upto 50% from the first day of the production. India will also be VW’s vendor outsourcing base in Asia.
