VOLKSWAGEN’S BIG PLANS FOR INDIA: WILL LAUNCH POLO IN 2010
Europe’s biggest car maker, Volkswagen AG has big plans for India. The company plans to garner a significant, 10% share of the Indian car market in the next 5-6 years for which the company will be increasing the number of models sold in India, and the number of dealerships.
“Considering the growth that the Indian market has witnessed, the aim for the Volkswagen group is to have an overall market share of 10 per cent in the next 5-6 years,” Volkswagen Group brand communications head Kurt Rippholz said here.
Volkswagen is huge and has a total of seven brand under its umbrella which includes biggies like Audi, Buggatti, Lamborghini. The group currently sells Audi, Skoda and Volkswagen branded cars in India.
The company will launch two car based on the polo platform, a hatchback and a notchback small sedan. “The VW brand is currently developing two cars based on the compact car ‘Polo’ platform, which could be rolled out from our Chakan facility by 2010. One will be a hatchback and the other will be a small sedan,” Volkaswagen brand communication head Kurt Rippholz said, adding that in July the company would launch its sedan Jetta to add to the already existing Passat in India.
The company wants to take the fight to Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car maker by keeping the cost down and for that the company is looking for higher localization content right from the outset.
“The car on the Polo platform will have about 50 per cent localisation to start with and eventually go up to 70-80 per cent,” Rippholz said.
The car will be based on the 6th generation Polo and is currently under development in Germany. The car is expected to sport a 1.2 litre petrol engine while the sedan might get a 1.6 litre petrol and diesel both.
The company is also expanding its technical office in India to carry out market research and increase component sourcing from the country.

Planning is something and pricing it well is something else. VW wants to command a premium, something they really shouldnt think to.
