YAMAHA AIMING 10% SHARE OF MOTORCYCLE MARKET
Yamaha Motors India is planning to achieve 10% of India’s motorcycle market after launching its fast selling top end motorbike YZF R15. The Company is also chalking out strategies to scale up its dealership network across the country.
Yamaha Motors India kicked off the sale of the YFZ R15 in mid June this year, which it priced at Rs. 97, 425. This is considerably higher than the products sold by rival companies such as Bajaj Auto Ltd’s Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi and Hero Honda Ltd’s Karisma motorbikes.
Yamaha Motors India has managed to sell 6,100 YZF R15 bikes since its launch. Moreover, the company claims that the R15 helped it sell nearly 11,798 bikes in July’08, registering a 34 per cent growth over the same month last year.

I am a Yamaha fan, but I feel sad that this is one company that is not anywhere near reaching 10% market share. From the time that Yamaha bought out Escorts they have been saying the same but in the end they have only been moving backwards. The R 15 cannot be a volumes model and the rest of the line-up has proved that they are none sellers. The only silver lining could be in the form of the FZ 150 which in the spy pics looks stunning. If Yamaha can get this model right, there could be something. Otherwise, its probably curtains.
Yamaha can achieve this target only if they introduce a bike that mass love. They are making superbikes for India, that may improve their profitability. But they cannot achieve the 10% mark.
I wish Yamaha would now aim for and bring a 250cc twin to do battle with the likes of the baby Ninja ! A good 250cc bike is a glaring omision in our market.
